Frequently asked questions

How much sunscreen do I actually need?
Far more than most people use. The rule of thumb is 7 teaspoons (about 35ml) per full-body application — one for the face and neck, one per arm, two per leg, and two for the torso. Applied three times per sun day across a Dutch summer, one person needs roughly 3 litres per season. That is exactly why sunsense is sold by the litre.
What protection does the formula give?
SPF 50+ with broad-spectrum coverage and high UVA protection. In lab testing the formula measures at SPF 60 or higher — we label it SPF 50+ because that is the highest classification allowed in the EU.
Will it leave a white cast?
No. sunsense uses new-generation organic UV filters (Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus, Uvinul T 150, Octisalate) instead of mineral filters like zinc oxide. The formula goes on invisible on all skin tones.
Is sunsense reef-safe?
Yes. The formula contains no oxybenzone, no octinoxate and no octocrylene — the three filters most strongly linked to coral damage. Combined with the refill system, it is designed to keep both your skin and the ocean out of trouble.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. The formula is fragrance-free, low-alcohol and non-comedogenic, and is developed for daily use on sensitive skin. As with any skincare product, patch-test first if you have known allergies or a skin condition.
What is the difference between the Face and Body lines?
Two textures, one protection standard. The Face line is a lightweight fluid that sits well under makeup and doesn't sting eyes. The Body line is a richer, non-greasy lotion built for fast application over large areas. Both are SPF 50+ broad-spectrum.
Does it contain skincare ingredients?
Yes — because something you apply 105 times a season should also be good skincare. The formula includes niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, panthenol and centella asiatica to support the skin barrier and hydration.
Is sunsense vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes. The formula contains no animal-derived ingredients and is never tested on animals, in line with EU cosmetics law and our own standards.
How does the refill system work?
You buy one 1000ml refill bottle and two refill tubes: a 200ml daily tube and a 100ml travel tube. When a refill tube runs out, refill it from the refill bottle in about ten seconds. When the refill is empty, order a refill — not new packaging.
How long does the 1000ml refill last?
Roughly 28 full-body applications — for most people that is one full Dutch summer of proper, guilt-free use for one person. A family will typically go through three to four litres per season.
How should I store it, and does it expire?
Store the mother pack cool and out of direct sunlight. Once opened, the formula stays effective for 12 months (see the PAO symbol on the bottle). An unopened bottle keeps for 30 months. Don't use last season's leftovers beyond those windows — SPF degrades.
Should I buy the Starter Kit or just a Refill?
If you're new to sunsense, buy the Starter Kit — it includes the 1000ml refill bottle plus the refill tubes you'll top up all season. Once you already own the refill tubes, order a Refill on its own and top them up. There's a Starter Kit and a Refill for both the Body and Face lines.
